With the conclusion of the 101st PGA Championship at Bethpage Black and Memorial Day coming this weekend, it’s time to get out and commit to your golf game!
I profiled 5 great public golf courses that all North Shore residents can enjoy. If you’d like to commit to a more comprehensive golfing lifestyle, I also included a bonus section that gives you a quick overview of the private golf clubs on the North Shore.
Whichever course you choose, today is the day to get a round in with friends and family!
Harbor Links is one of the premier public golf clubs on Long Island. The 18-Hole Championship course is a links-style course with views of Hempstead Harbor. The 9-Hole executive course is truly a hidden gem. This is a perfect course for younger golfers or for golfers who don’t have as much distance in their game. The instruction offered at Harbor Links is incredible. Led by Director of Instruction James Hong, Harbor Links offers private instruction for adults and juniors. Their summer camp sessions are especially popular, and people travel from all over the area to attend these fun & instructional camps.
The Glen Cove Golf Club is a fun course on the North Shore of Long Island. A number of holes offer stunning water views. The 2nd hole, in particular, looks out on the Long Island Sound. As you set up for your approach shot, you might want to stop and enjoy the cool breeze coming off the sound. Glen Cove residents can become members, offering priority pricing and priority reservation privileges. The Club offers group clinics throughout the year, and their summer camp is popular with local residents. The View Grill of Glen Cove is on site, and there’s a popular bar with a view of the water in the distance to enjoy drinks after your round.
At 1600 yards, Christopher Morley Park is a short, nine-hole course conveniently located right off the LIE in Roslyn in the heart of the North Shore. While the course is not exceptionally challenging, it is great to get out and enjoy a round in the beautiful setting. Beyond the golf course, though, Christopher Morley Park offers a fitness trail, an outdoor ice-skating rink, a swimming pool & a dog run.
The Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course is an 18-hole, Par 70 course that North Shore residents love to play. Its narrow fairways, multiple water holes, and well-kept bunkers make this a local favorite. With such tight fairways, this course punishes you if you don’t hit it straight. The Lucas Golf Center offers a full range of instructional options both on the practice range and on the course. Residents can become members to enjoy added benefits & preferred pricing.
Bethpage Black is one of the most celebrated public golf courses in America today. This course just hosted the 2019 PGA Championship, & the Black Course has hosted the US Open & The Barclays. This course is designed for golfers who can drive the ball. The sheer length & the dramatic changes in elevation make this course extremely challenging. While the Black Course justifiably gets a lot of attention, the park offers golfers 4 other courses to enjoy.
The North Shore of Long Island is home to some of the finest private golf clubs on America. Many of the private clubs offer members a lifestyle beyond golf: tennis, platform tennis, squash, swimming, fine dining, and more. The holidays are especially fun at the local clubs, with each facility taking pride in their own unique celebrations. Generations of families enjoy memorable moments in the gorgeous facilities. Membership options vary from club to club. The one characteristic, however, that each club shares is an expertly maintained golf course with every amenity one can desire.
